Implementing Smoke-Free Policies in Hosptial Settings

Abstract
As health institutions, hospitals have a responsibility to protect the health of their staff and patients and to provide a safe and healthy environment through ¡¯Smoke-Free Polices¡¯ which are rigorously enforced and are accompanied by advice and support for staff and patients in healthcare facilities in their areas. To support the implementation of comprehensive smoke- free hospital policies across Korea, we have evaluated the experiences of many USA and UK hospitals. We can learn important lessons from their experiences. In the future, identifying ways to support staff in effectively enforcing smoke-free policies without feeling at risk would be useful. Because hospitals typically have large campuses with safe or sheltered areas available, it may be necessary to ban smoking on hospital grounds in order to have a more significant impact on employee cessation. Implementation of a smoke-free hospital sends a clear message regarding the hospital¡¯s commitment to healthy lifestyles. Providing leadership in this domain is likely to influence the community¡¯s attitude toward tobacco use and to help create a community in which quitting is encouraged and facilitated.
